If you're placing your bed on pavers, concrete, tiles, a porch, or anything you don't want to stain, it’s better to add a bed liner or geotextile fabric. Go ahead and place your box in position, then put the fabric on the bottom of the bed from the inside. Run any excess fabric up each side and then fill your bed with soil. The fabric allows water to drain freely, but it keeps soil from messing up your floor. Optional: To really protect the surface, place thick builder's plastic down before putting your bed into position. Once the bed is filled, any excess plastic can be trimmed around the edge of the garden bed with an Exacto knife.
Yes, you can combine two beds together. We always recommend installing bracing bars when combining beds to prevent bowing due to soil pressure. For detailed instructions, check out growepic.co/bracinginfo.
Raised bed gardening reduces pest pressures, elevates the garden to a more comfortable working level, and is a great way to guarantee you have quality soil to grow in. You’ll also have fewer weeds to deal with and an easier time clearing out any that pop up. Also, your soil doesn’t become compacted like an in-ground bed. It gives you better control over your gardening environment.
Pretty much anything. We’ve got some ideas to get you started, but really, the sky’s the limit.
All of our Birdies Beds are constructed from 24-gauge, cold-rolled steel with an aluminum-zinc (aluzinc) alloy coating. The aluzinc steel is up to 7x more rust-resistant and corrosion-resistant than standard galvanized metal. Like all iron-based metals, steel will rust eventually, but with proper care, these beds will last you 20+ years. You can improve the longevity of your beds by keeping your soil free-draining, within a 6-7 pH range, and not using fresh chicken manure.
All the materials used are 100% food-safe and will not leach into your soil, allowing for safe, healthy food production. Our aluzinc steel raised beds are coated with a non-toxic, USDA-approved paint and the hardware supplied is food-grade stainless steel.

No, they won’t. Compared to standard concrete and plastic beds (especially if made from a dark color or material) our metal raised beds will outperform all of them, maintaining even, cool soil temperatures. The superior reflectivity of the aluzinc steel keeps most of the heat from ever passing into the soil. And, that bulk of soil in your bed will quickly absorb and spread the small amount of heat it gets from touching the stainless steel panels.
Yes, that means no drainage holes to drill, and the soil gets to touch the ground, so you end up with superior, microbe-rich soil and healthier plants.

I made a 30 ft long, 4 ft wide bed out of four Birdies kits And I got three extra 2x2 beds from the corners. This bed was previously flush with the ground and I couldn't get anything but weeds to grow in my heavily amended Louisiana clay soil. I liked it flush to the ground for growing tall crops like tomatoes okra and corn, but this will still work. This bed is filled with 1 yd of sand for a base and then three yards of raised bed mix from the nursery to which I'm going to add some coconut coir and vermiculite in the top layer. I didn't have any material for Hugelkulture this time.

We totally get the frustration with that Louisiana clay soil - even with heavy amendments, some soils just seem determined to grow weeds better than anything else! It's great that you found a solution that works, and while we know you loved having that flush-to-ground setup for your tall crops like tomatoes, okra, and corn, the 15" height should still give you plenty of flexibility for those varieties.
Your soil mix strategy sounds really thoughtful - starting with that sand base for drainage and then building up with the raised bed mix, plus adding coconut coir and vermiculite to the top layer. That's going to create such a nice growing environment, especially compared to what you were dealing with before. And hey, there's always next season for incorporating some Hugelkulture if you want to experiment with that!

Within 6 months of use the Birdies Tall Raised Bed—Paint on the inside began Peeling and Rusting. We emptied one of our tall beds because we needed a shorter one where we had put it. Bought Feb 2025. Filled March 2025. Emptied September 2025 and found peeling paint. Pretty disappointed! We have 2 others that are still full so don’t know if they’re peeling also. Around the whole interior!

The 15" tall metal raised garden bed is great. It was easy enough to put together. I have become more of a vegetable gardener and I'm loving it. Boxes like these make it that much nicer! Glad I come across Epic Gardening website a couple years ago! Everyone that has seen my new boxes from EG (also have the 29" tall metal raised garden bed) love how they look and how gardening in them is made so much easier with them being higher. Glad I took the plunge!!!! I had originally started in raised beds over 20 years ago with 4'x8'x12" cedar beds. They lasted a long time and I loved working in them. I am 66 years old and these new EG beds will be my last ones that I have to add to my garden. When you have the right "tools", the work is much easier!!!!
