Kickstart your gardening journey with our Essential Seed Starting Kit, designed to set up any gardener and their seeds with a smooth, successful start. This dependable, reusable kit includes two of our most impactful tools for simple, efficient seed starting: 12 of our Epic 6-Cell Seed Starting Trays and one Epic 1020 Universal Bottom Tray.
The Universal Bottom Tray allows for easy bottom watering, so your seedlings stay well-hydrated while your growing space stays clean. The 6-Cell Trays feature extra-large finger holes at the base for easier transplanting. Just pop the seedlings out with your finger, no tools necessary.
Both trays are crafted with unmatched durability, made from flexible, nearly unbreakable material that's built to last you season after season. That means no more disposable seed trays or starter pots. All 12 6-Cell Seed Starting Trays nest perfectly on the Epic Universal Bottom Tray, giving you a clean, organized start to your garden. Whether you’re growing herbs, veggies, or flowers, the Essential Seed Starting Kit helps you plant and grow with confidence.
Built to Last: 500% thicker than standard trays. A single bottom tray can hold over 25 pounds without warping.
Engineered for Plant Growth: Designed with air-pruning slots to create a strong, healthy root system.
Eco-Friendly: Made in the USA from BPA-free recycled plastic, this tray helps reduce plastic waste, supporting your sustainable gardening practices.
Convenient & Flexible: Fit 12 Epic 6-Cell Trays into a standard 1020 Universal Bottom Tray, replicating a classic 72-cell tray.

How to use
How to use
Step 1: Prepare the Soil
Fill the 6-Cell Tray with a seed starting mix. Lightly water the soil so it’s moist but not soaked. Gently press the soil down with your finger to remove any gaps, then refill if needed.
Step 2: Plant the Seeds
If your seeds are meant to be surface-sown, press them against the pre-dampened soil but leave them uncovered; some seeds need light to germinate. If they have a planting depth indicated on the packet, use a pencil, chopstick, or your fingertip to make an indentation to the correct depth and drop in the seed.
Step 3: Water the Seeds
Add a light misting of water from a spray bottle or just enough to moisten the seeds, then cover them with soil and lightly press down to ensure no air holes remain around the seed. If you have plastic wrap handy, loosely drape it over the top to promote high humidity conditions (seeds love this), or use a specialized dome cover.
Step 4: Find the Right Spot
Place your tray on a sunny windowsill or under a grow light, depending on what your seed needs. Keep the soil moist as the seeds start to germinate. Once you see the sprouts, remove the plastic wrap or dome.
Step 5: Care for Your Seedlings
Keep the healthiest seedling in each cell and remove extras with a pair of scissors, being careful not to damage the healthy seedling. Keep watering the soil from the bottom by adding water to the outer tray. This way, the soil stays moist without splashing on the plants.
Step 6: Transplanting
Continue to keep the soil moist as your plants grow. When your plants are about 3 to 4 inches tall, carefully push them out of the tray using the large finger holes at the bottom, and transplant them into bigger pots or directly into your garden.
Helpful Tips:
- Soil Choice: Use a lightweight, seed-starting mix like peat or coco coir and vermiculite. Avoid heavy mixes or ones with added fertilizer.
- Watering: Water from the bottom and avoid soaking the soil. You can use the condensation on the dome as a guide: more condensation means more moisture.
- Light: As soon as your seedlings sprout, place them under a grow light for 16 hours a day, with the light 4 to 6 inches above the plants.
- Transplant Time: Most seedlings are ready to be transplanted after about 4 weeks.
Cleaning Your Epic Starter Cells
We recommend hand-washing with hot, soapy water as the best way to keep the material in good shape for years of use. A good dish detergent should sterilize the trays enough to protect your seedlings.

FAQ
FAQ
Q: Are the trays recyclable?
A: They are made from recycled, UV-resistant American plastic, but because our trays are super strong and reusable, you can use them season after season instead of recycling them.
Q: Can I mix Epic trays and pots that aren’t included in the kit?
A: Yes. Our Epic trays, domes, pots, and heat mats all work together so you can build on to the Essential Seed Starting Kit to create your ideal gardening setup.
Q: How long will my trays last with regular use?
A: Epic Trays are rigid, yet flexible. They’re practically unbreakable and with proper care, should last you a lifetime.
Q: How do I clean my trays between plantings?
A: We recommend hand-washing with hot, soapy water as the best way to keep the material in good shape for years of use. A good dish detergent should sterilize the trays enough to protect your seedlings.
Q: Will the soil fall out of the 6-Cell Tray?
A: As long as your mix is formulated properly, it won’t fall out. Each individual cell in our Epic Trays features an air-pruning side slot on all four corners to discourage root circling and encourage better root growth. The bottoms of each cell are also open, providing air pruning at the lower end of each cell.
Q: When should I transplant my seedlings?
A: Transplant your seedlings when they are 3 to 4 inches tall. To remove your plants, simply push the seedling out with your finger, then transplant them into your garden or a larger pot.

Simple Step-By-Step Guide To Starting Seeds At Home

Use a fine-particulate seed starting soil and pre-moisten it before filling the cell trays. Avoid chunky or woody potting blends that may create air pockets next to your planted seeds.

Be sure to follow the sowing depth instructions on your seed packet! Some seeds like to be sown deeply, while others prefer being on or barely under the soil.

A germination dome helps retain moisture in the soil. You’ll still need to water, but less often. Check regularly to ensure the soil stays evenly damp during germination and plant development.

If your seeds prefer warm soil temperatures, use our seedling heat mat to warm the soil. Our grow lights provide ideal lighting for newly germinated plants until it’s time to transplant.

Remove the germination dome when your seedlings are about an inch tall to allow for more airflow.
