How & Why to Up-Pot Your Seedlings
- Once your seedlings have reached a larger, intermediate stage, the Epic 5” Cube Pot will come into play. This is the next step to take once your seedlings have outgrown their cell trays and the 3” pot.
- Soil wise, you can use a light, porous, well-draining potting mix with a bit of vermiculite and compost in it.
- Fill your 5” pot with soil, then make a hole big enough to hold the soil that’s already bundled around the roots of your seedling.
- Make sure the soil in the cell tray is well watered so it doesn’t just crumble apart, that way you can retain the soil around the seedling.
- You can use your finger to pop the seedling out of its cell tray using the hole in the base. You should never need any external tool to remove a seedling from one of our trays.
- Once loosened, pop the seedling right down into the hole you made and then press the top soil down using your fingers. Give it a little bit of compression, but not too much. You don’t want to suffocate the roots.
- This slightly larger transplant pot will give whatever you’re growing more space for root expansion before they’re ready to make the jump to the outside garden.
- These pots are also great for propagating cuttings from other plants.
Pro-Tip: To keep your Epic Cube Pot in good shape for years of use, we recommend hand-washing with hot, soapy water. Sterilize the trays with a good dish detergent to protect your seedlings.

FAQ
FAQ
Q: How long do Epic Pots last?
A: Practically unbreakable, they’re made from durable, injection-molded, recycled plastic and designed to provide a long lifespan of 10+ years. That’s a lot of growing seasons.
Q: Are your pots BPA-free?
A: Yes, they’re made from BPA-free, recycled polypropylene (#5 plastic) and no PFAS are used when we make them. So, safe for your plants and safe for you.
Q: What plants can I use the 5" Cube Pot for?
A: These are perfect for transplanting/up-potting all kinds of plants, from cucumbers and tomatoes to herbs and flowers. They’ll support anything that needs a little more room to grow before it's time to shift them into the garden. You can also grow your favorite herbs, smaller veggies, and some houseplants directly in them.
Q: What is air pruning and how does it help?
A: Air pruning happens naturally when roots reach the open air. Since they can't grow without moisture and darkness, roots that make it through the air-pruning slots basically prune themselves, pushing the plant to make a stronger root network inside the pot. This prevents root spiraling and encourages your plant to develop a healthier root system. It's one of the key features of our Epic Pots.
Q: Can I stack these pots for storage?
A: Yes, they’re designed that way. The compactness of the Epic 5" Cube Pot makes it easy to stack and store. Whether you're in between seasons or prepping for your next round of seedlings, they won’t take up much space.
Q: What domes or trays can I use the 5" pot with?
A: You can fit up to 8 Epic 5” Cube Pots into our Universal Bottom Trays for a super streamlined growing setup. Epic Cell Germination Domes & Bottom Trays are designed to fit on top. These clear domes help increase seed germination rates, germination time, and increase plant growth overall, while our bottom trays allow you to bottom water your seedlings indoors without any mess.

Simple Step-By-Step Guide To Starting Seeds At Home

Use a fine-particulate seed starting soil and pre-moisten it before filling the cell trays. Avoid chunky or woody potting blends that may create air pockets next to your planted seeds.

Be sure to follow the sowing depth instructions on your seed packet! Some seeds like to be sown deeply, while others prefer being on or barely under the soil.

A germination dome helps retain moisture in the soil. You’ll still need to water, but less often. Check regularly to ensure the soil stays evenly damp during germination and plant development.

If your seeds prefer warm soil temperatures, use our seedling heat mat to warm the soil. Our grow lights provide ideal lighting for newly germinated plants until it’s time to transplant.

Remove the germination dome when your seedlings are about an inch tall to allow for more airflow.
