Product Details

Pomegranate ‘Wonderful’ is one of the most popular varieties for home gardens. It makes a tremendous shrub-like tree in the garden or a hedging plant for a border. This easy-to-grow variety requires minimal care and maintenance to produce tangy and sweet fruit with dark red seeds.

In the spring, the shrubby tree is filled with pretty dark orange flowers and the beginnings of ruby red pomegranate fruit.

The tree is upright, growing with graceful arching stems once the fruit weighs it down in spring and summer.

All pomegranates are grown from propagated cuttings and are not grafted.

Find a position for 'Wonderful' pomegranates in full sun. The more sun you can provide, the more fruit they'll make! Plant in spring or fall to give the plants a good start. Give them enough space to grow away from structures and other plants. To restrict their height, prune this variety in winter while it is dormant. Left alone, they will grow 8-12 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide. Dig a hole twice the width and depth of the root ball and add a load of compost into the dug-out soil. Place half the enriched soil back into the hole and plant the tree. Spread the roots carefully and backfill as you go, pressing down the soil to remove air pockets. Plant at the same level as it comes in the bag. Water well in and add a layer of mulch, leaving a space of at least 4 inches away from the main stem.

Location:

‘Wonderful’ pomegranates can be grown over a wide area across hardiness zones 8-11. Plant in full sun in fertile, well-draining soil.

Harvesting:

As the trees mature, they will produce more fruit that will be larger than the previous year’s fruit. They will sometimes form in clusters. Fruit will be ready to harvest in October.

Fertilizer:

Feed in spring before the primary growing season with a balanced fertilizer.

Care and Maintenance

Watering: Pomegranate trees, in general, are drought-resistant and will even grow in arid climates. Water at least 2-3 times a week in hot summers, and on average days, once a week is sufficient. As the tree ages, it requires less added water and can rely on rainfall. Extra watering, however, will produce higher-quality fruits.

Fertilizing: Feed pomegranates with a balanced fertilizer in spring before the new growth starts sprouting.

Pruning: Prune in winter to shape the tree with at least four main branches. Remove any dead or crossing branches. Cut at an angle just above a leaf bud to prune to control the size of the plants. They can be regularly pruned if you want to use them as hedging plants for ornamental purposes.

Pests and Diseases: Use pest management guidelines to manage pests like aphids and fruit flies, and diseases like Alternaria fruit rot and molds.

Pollination: ‘Wonderful’ is self-pollinating, so one tree is enough.

Harvesting: If your fruit starts to crack, it is ready for harvesting. In nature, this will help the seed to fall to the ground to start new plants. Make sure to get them harvested before any birds or squirrels devour them. Cut the fruits off the plant at the stem with a sharp pair of pruners.

Recovery Time: Transitioning from our nursery to your home can be a bit of a shock to your plant. A short acclimation period helps it recover and reduces stress.

Climate Adjustment: Every environment is unique. Giving your plant time to adjust to the local climate, humidity, and light conditions in a shady spot will set it up for better growth and health.

How to Acclimate Your Plant: Keep the plant in its container and place it in a shady, sheltered area away from high winds. Ensure it's watered adequately – the soil should be moist but not waterlogged. Monitor the plant for any signs of distress and allow it to adjust for a few days before planting. After a few days of acclimation, your plant will be better prepared to thrive in its new home for years to come.
