Product Details

Old-fashioned corn like your grandparents grew! From the garden to the pot, 'True Gold' will transform any plate to a luxurious meal. Large, 9" ears are very sweet and tender, plants are resistant to stalk-lodging, and stalks are less likely to bend and kink in windy areas.

Attributes: Frost Sensitive

Sowing Info

When to Sow Outside: RECOMMENDED. 1 to 2 weeks after your average last frost date, and when soil temperature is at least 60°F; ideally 65°–90°F.

Growing Info

Harvesting: Corn is ready about 3 weeks after the silks appear. Harvest when the silks are brown, but not dried, and the husks are dark green; ears should be plump, and rounded rather than pointed at the tip. To test for ripeness, gently pull back the husk and pop a kernel; the liquid should be whitish; if it is still clear, ears are not quite ready.

Nearly every seed germinated despite a particular pesky Robin plucking the seeds up every day. I’d just push them back under the soil and they were fine. I have limited space so I grew mine in a 3x3’ area 6” apart. Pollination in that setup was excellent as each ear was fully developed and each stalk produced 2-3 ears of corn. The stalks were tall and sturdy even with high winds we tend to get. Almost all the ears of corn were very sweet and tender but a few had a different texture (a bit mushy but also chewy). Likely my fault as I may have delayed harvest a bit long. I plan to purchase 2 more packs and double my harvest next growing season. Hope this review helps and you give growing corn a try even if you have limited space!

First year gardening, and 100% germination rate on the True Gold corn! The rest is all up to me, we’ll see how they grow and taste, but I can rave now about the seed quality of these especially, and everything I’ve gotten from Botanical Interests.

I planted 3, 18 foot long rows of this corn. Most seeds germinated. The plants dried up and died when about 4 inches tall. Very disappointing. I live in the Houston, TX area. Zone 8/9

    First time corn grower.

TLDR: easy grow but horrible eating texture!

Pros: I'm a first time corn grower and this was super easy to grow. Almost 100% Germination rate, and grew very tall! Each stalk grew at least 2-3 ears!

Cons: The corn texture was NOT delicious. I am a brand new beginner so I'm not sure if I did something wrong in the grow to have this gummy/mealy texture. I tried harvesting the ears a bit early, a bit later, the later is far worse but even an earlier harvest wasn't good. Researching ideas to see if I did something wrong in the growing process but I also may try a different variety and hope that the taste and texture are a bit better?

One of the packs I received had less than 10% germination rate.

But customer service did make it up and send some replacements.

Won't know how these go until I can plant in spring.
