Product Details

Unlike most fig trees that require warmer temperatures to thrive, Brown Turkey Fig Trees are able to withstand temperatures down to 10°F (-12°C), suitable for fig lovers in cooler regions.

The fruits are a wonderful deep burgundy color with a contrasting pink center. Their sweet taste makes them perfect for snacking straight off the tree or stealing the show on a charcuterie board.

Brown Turkey Fig Trees can grow to 20 or 30 feet in height if given the space. However, they can be trimmed regularly or planted in containers to keep them compact, suitable for any garden size.

All figs are grown from propagated cuttings and are not grafted.

Choose a location with full sun to match their Mediterranean native environments. For the quickest growth and a strong root system, plant in rich, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. In lower zones, also ensure your chosen location is protected from cold winds, or plant in containers to move the tree to a protected location. Dig a hole twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball. Place the tree in the hole, ensuring it's straight, and backfill with soil, tamping down gently to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots. Apply a layer of mulch around 3-4 inches thick around the base of the tree after planting.

Sunlight:

Plant in full sun, providing at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Watering:

Brown Turkey Figs are drought-tolerant once established, but need regular water for several weeks after planting.

Fertilizing:

Feed annually in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer according to packaging instructions.

Care and Maintenance

Watering: Water often after planting, as soon as the first few inches of soil dries out (usually around once per week, depending on climate). These trees are considered drought-tolerant once established, but regular moisture levels are important during fruiting to stop the fruits from splitting.

Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer. You can apply again around mid-summer to improve performance if needed.

Pruning: Moderate pruning can help shape the tree, either into a small tree shape or a shrub shape, or restrict size. Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant.

Pests and Diseases: While they aren’t majorly prone to disease problems, Brown Turkey Figs are susceptible to common fig diseases like leaf spot, rust, and anthracnose, along with pests like nematodes, scale, mites, and beetles.

Pollination: Brown Turkey Figs are self-fertile, so you don’t need to plant another fig tree for a successful harvest. However, you can purchase the Fig Pollination Pack which includes the Chicago Hardy Fig and Black Mission Fig.

Harvesting: Harvest only when the fruits are ripe, as they will not continue to ripen off the tree. Remove them carefully when the skin changes color and taste test.

Recovery Time: Transitioning from our nursery to your home can be a bit of a shock to your plant. A short acclimation period helps it recover and reduces stress.

Climate Adjustment: Every environment is unique. Giving your plant time to adjust to the local climate, humidity, and light conditions in a shady spot will set it up for better growth and health.

How to Acclimate Your Plant: Keep the plant in its container and place it in a shady, sheltered area away from high winds. Ensure it's watered adequately – the soil should be moist but not waterlogged. Monitor the plant for any signs of distress and allow it to adjust for a few days before planting. After a few days of acclimation, your plant will be better prepared to thrive in its new home for years to come.
