A genuine heat lover, Mexican sunflower sets the dog days of summer ablaze with sizzling 3" orange flowers. A large, multi-branching and imposing plant for the back of the border, it tolerates infertile soil, drought, and neglect. Lovely mixed with purple grass, and absolutely stunning next to purple flowers. Sunflowers are edible, with a bittersweet flavor. The petals add a pretty pop of color ion salads and desserts. The young, sunflower buds are edible, with a flavor similar to artichoke hearts. They can be grilled, marinated, or sauteed for an unusual appetizer or side dish.

It blooms the most beautiful orange flowers. I live in Jamaica; that’s located in the Caribbean- Zone 13 and it held up in the heat quite well. Definitely one of my garden staples going forward

- Cecily G.Verified ReviewerRated 5 out of 5 starsSep 8, 2025They really are like a torch at the end of summer!
I loved growing these! I planted them right in front of a bunch of BI sunflowers and when the sunflowers began to fade, the Mexican sunflowers have TAKEN off and are so pretty and prolific! I will definitely grow these again!🧡🏵️
Was this helpful?Which best describes you as a gardener? IntermediateEGEpic GardeningSep 9, 2025Hey Cecily,
Thank you so much for sharing your gorgeous photos of your Torch Mexican Sunflowers! What a brilliant planting strategy - using them as the "second act" behind your BI sunflowers! It sounds like you created the perfect succession display where one beautiful bloom takes over just as the other starts to fade.
Your enthusiasm is absolutely contagious, and we're so thrilled you'll be growing them again!
Keep on growing 🌻️
