Out of all the sweet varieties of cherry trees, ‘Bing’ is one of the most popular grown by commercial farmers. The trees are filled with sweet-smelling white blossoms in the spring, with fruits following in July.
It produces an abundant, heart-shaped, deep-red fruit for a sweet and delicious summer crop, ready for a pie. The seeds are small, with all the value in the flesh. The trees can produce up to 50 pounds of fruit per year.
It thrives in a temperate climate and will produce juicy fruit for many years to come. The trees are rounded with dark green serrated leaves that turn gold in the fall.
All cherry varieties are grafted on Mazzard root stock, a semi-dwarf variety with greater cold tolerance. Mazzard is more vigorous in poor soils allowing for greater success across the United States.

Choose an area that receives full sun at least 30 feet away from other plants and structures. The soil should be slightly sandy and well-draining. Remove any debris or weeds from the site and dig a hole twice the width of the root ball so that the roots have a chance to spread out. Plant the tree with the graft union 2-3 inches above the soil level. In windy areas, stake the plants at the planting stage. Backfill and tamp down to remove any air pockets. Create a basin around the tree and water in the well. Add a layer of organic mulch 4-6 inches away from the trunk.

Care and Maintenance
Watering: Water deeply at least once a week and more often in warm and dry times. Keep the trees evenly moist while they are young.
Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced fertilizer in spring before the new growth sprouts. Feed 6-8 inches from the trunk so the fertilizer goes directly to the roots.
Pruning: In late winter, prune the tree by removing any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Shape the tree to keep it neat and to allow light to enter the middle of the canopy.
Pests and Diseases: Look out for things like cherry aphids, western cherry fruit flies, peach tree borer, and spider mites and deal with these quickly with the appropriate treatment.
Pollination: Bing cherry trees are not self-pollinating, so another cherry tree needs to be planted nearby to help with pollination. Use varieties like Black Tartarian or Lapins.
Harvesting: Cherries will be ready to harvest in early summer when they are fully ripe and red. They will not ripen off the tree.
Recovery Time: Transitioning from our nursery to your home can be a bit of a shock to your plant. A short acclimation period helps it recover and reduces stress.
Climate Adjustment: Every environment is unique. Giving your plant time to adjust to the local climate, humidity, and light conditions in a shady spot will set it up for better growth and health.
How to Acclimate Your Plant: Keep the plant in its container and place it in a shady, sheltered area away from high winds. Ensure it's watered adequately – the soil should be moist but not waterlogged. Monitor the plant for any signs of distress and allow it to adjust for a few days before planting. After a few days of acclimation, your plant will be better prepared to thrive in its new home for years to come.
