Care and Maintenance
Watering: Watering needs vary based on soil type and weather conditions, but a general rule is to water deeply once a week, especially during dry spells, to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top 2-3 inches of soil to dry out between waterings. During hot, dry periods, increase watering frequency.
Fertilizing: Spring: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring before new growth begins. Summer: Optionally, apply a half-strength dose of the same fertilizer in mid-summer to support continued growth. Avoid late-season fertilization as this can stimulate new growth that might not harden off before winter.
Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches and to shape the tree.
Pests and Diseases: Monitor for common pests and diseases. Treat with appropriate horticultural oils or fungicides if necessary.
Pollination: Prairie Fire Crabapple trees are self-fertile, meaning they do not require another tree to pollinate. However, planting more than one crabapple tree can increase fruit production through cross-pollination. Ensure bees and other pollinators can access the flowers by avoiding the use of insecticides during blooming
Harvesting: Wait until the crabapples are fully colored and firm, typically in late summer to early fall. Gently twist and pull the fruit from the tree or use pruning shears to cut the stems. Store crabapples in a cool, dry place. They can also be preserved through canning or making jelly.
Planting Care
Sunlight: Full sun
Soil: Crabapples prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil. Test the pH and amend the soil if necessary. Loosen the soil to a depth of 12-18 inches and mix in compost to improve fertility and drainage.
Location: Select a location with full sun and well-draining soil. Ensure there's enough space for the tree to grow, considering its mature size.
Watering: After planting, water the tree deeply to settle the soil around the roots and eliminate air pockets.
Harvesting: If desired, harvest crabapples when they are ripe, typically in late summer or early fall.
Fertilizer: Fertilize in early spring before new growth begins with a balanced fertilizer.
