Both tasty and attractive, this 1800s French heirloom also known as Merveille de Quatre Saisons has tender, sweet leaves that are green at the base, turning to a beautiful cranberry-red, and forming a crinkly rosette that almost looks like a flower! If kept moist, it won't turn bitter when heat arrives. Rosettes are 8"–12" in diameter, good for large containers.

I planted this for my fall garden. We had an expected early frost this year. We hadn't had time to mulch or anything, but we covered the garden beds with a blanket over them and hoped for the best. It was already getting late and cold by the time we got the blankets on, and this one came through like a champ. The taste is pretty good too!

I've tried this variety in the past, with similar results. I'm growing under LED grow lights in my plant room, with many other varieties. This variety just does not perform under these conditions.
