Product Details

Ice Queen' dates back to 1883, and gets its name because it is cold tolerant, but also tolerates heat well and is slow to bolt. Also considered a summer crisp or Batavia, this bright, emerald green lettuce with frilly leaves has crisp texture and excellent fresh flavor. Also delicious as a baby green in as little as 21 days. You can harvest the outer, frilly leaves while waiting for the head to form.

Germinated quick with near 100% germination rate. Reine de Glaces head tends to be looser than standard iceberg lettuce but the flavor is much sweeter and juicer. And because the head it form is bit looser, it has less chance of tip burn (rotting edge of the leaves). And more tolerant to soil borne pathogen compared to other varieties we grow.

The frilly edge of the leaves makes this a very eye catching head of lettuce. Size of the head is around 10 inches. We do a succession planting every two weeks.

Here’s a photo of my “I live in Idaho and can’t wait for spring” cut and come again bucket! Yes, it’s a mix I tossed in lettuce, basil and some spinach seeds. I’ll just keep snipping as long as I can!

Ice Queen is well named. The queen of lettuce. Ever since finding this variety in a lettuce mix, this is the only lettuce that we grow. Everyone who eats it wants to know what it is and where we got it.

Ice Queen is my favorite lettuce. Slow to bolt, light green and thick leaves. A great mainstay.
