Discover the Japanese Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica), a fruit tree that brings a touch of exotic charm and a bounty of delicious, apricot-like fruits to your garden. Perfect for those who love a mix of beauty and practicality, this versatile tree is a must-have for any green space.
Features & Benefits
- Delicious Fruit: Enjoy sweet, juicy loquats that ripen in late spring to early summer, ideal for fresh eating or making delectable jams and desserts.
- Evergreen Elegance: The loquat tree boasts glossy, dark green leaves that provide year-round visual interest, making it a standout feature in your landscape.
- Spring Blooms: Fragrant white flowers bloom in the fall, adding a touch of fragrance and beauty before the fruits develop.
- Adaptable Growing: Suitable for containers or small gardens, the Japanese Loquat can be grown indoors or outdoors, offering flexibility for different spaces and climates.
- Low Maintenance: This hardy tree is drought-tolerant once established, making it a great choice for gardeners looking for a low-maintenance addition.
Growing Tips
The Japanese Loquat thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. It can tolerate a variety of soil types but does best in slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. Regular watering during the first few years helps establish a strong root system, after which the tree becomes quite drought-tolerant.
Indoor and Container Growing
If you're short on garden space or want to enjoy fresh loquats indoors, growing the Japanese Loquat in a container is a fantastic option. Choose a large pot with good drainage, and use a high-quality potting mix. Place the container in a sunny spot, and rotate it periodically to ensure even growth. Regular pruning will help maintain a manageable size and encourage more fruit production.
Why Choose Japanese Loquat?
Add a unique and fruitful addition to your garden with the Japanese Loquat. Its delightful fruits, evergreen beauty, and adaptability make it a standout choice for both novice and experienced gardeners. Whether you grow it outdoors or in a container, this tree promises to be a source of joy and delicious harvests for years to come.

My tree got here much quicker than I expected. She looks big and healthy, a bit dry after the trip, but I can't wait to put her in the ground and start getting fruit!!!

- KatePA, United StatesVerified ReviewerRated 4 out of 5 starsAug 8, 2026Good looking, healthy tree, but…
I waited a year to write this review because I wanted to assess the health of the tree. It came at about 3-5 feet tall. It was healthy, but the structure needed some attention. I pruned it and potted it up from its 3 gallon pot to a 7 gallon. I’m in the Northeast, so it will live in a pot. It grew beautifully. In fact, it grew so much, I airlayered off a few branches. The tree has done beautifully. But..as is stated in another comment, it’s from a seed not a graft. Seed grown loquat will take much longer to fruit. While I accept that, not knowing the actual estimated age of the tree makes it less desirable. It would be helpful to give that information rather than just the tree size. Did I buy a 2 year old tree? A 4 year old tree? This is information that would be helpful and reduce the likelihood of disappointment from a buyers perspective. As I said, it’s a healthy, beautiful tree. But I have no idea how long I will be waiting to see it flower.

Without knowing that bit of information, I' not sure if I can appreciate this plant as much as the big box stores which do provide that information upfront. 5 stars for providing that bit of information, please.

Thank you so much for your review and for bringing up this important question! You're absolutely right that knowing whether a Japanese Loquat is grown from seed or grafted makes a huge difference for gardeners trying to make informed decisions. The Japanese Loquat we have are from seed.
We totally understand your frustration about not having that information readily available upfront - it's such a key detail that can really impact your expectations for fruit production, timing, and overall plant performance. Grafted loquats typically fruit much sooner and produce fruit that's true to the parent variety, while seed-grown plants can take years longer to fruit and might not have the same fruit characteristics.
That's really valuable feedback about making this information more prominent in our product descriptions. We want to make sure our customers have all the details they need to feel confident about their purchases. I'll be sure to share this with our team.
Keep on growing 🌻️
