Product Details

The tried and tested variety of cherry tree ‘Black Tartarian’ has been around for a long time due to its good performance in the garden. Its drought-tolerance once established, and adaptability to varied soil conditions is prized in commercial and home gardens. Black Tartarian produces an abundance of sweet, tasty, dark red (almost black) cherries in the summer.

Not only is it easy to grow, ‘Black Tartarian’ is one of the first cherries to flower and fruit, with bunches of luscious, juicy fruit, perfect for eating fresh off the tree.

All cherry varieties are grafted on Mazzard root stock, a semi-dwarf variety with greater cold tolerance. Mazzard is more vigorous in poor soils allowing for greater success across the United States.

Choose a position in full sunlight, with lots of space to grow in well-draining soil. The tree should be planted at least 15-20 feet away from other trees and structures. Make space for a pollinator tree to be planted with this variety. Dig a hole twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball. Place the tree in the hole, ensuring it's straight, and the graft union is 2-3 inches above the soil line. Backfill the tree and tamp the soil down to remove any air pockets. Water in a well and cover the ground with a 3-4 inch layer of organic mulch to preserve water and limit weeds.

Sunlight

‘Black Tartarian’ grows best with at least 6-8 hours of sunlight daily.

Harvesting:

Regular harvesting will encourage more fruit production. The fruit must be picked when fully ripe.

Watering:

Depending on the rainfall in your area, cherry trees need deep watering at least once a week until they are established. Once mature, this variety is drought-resistant.

Care and Maintenance

Watering: Water every week depending on the rainfall in your area, and water more often if it's dry and hot. Keep well-watered until the tree is adequately established. After the first year or two, it will be drought tolerant.

Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring with a balanced fertilizer, just before the new growth appears. Apply around the root zone for the best results.

Pruning: In late winter, the trees can be pruned to allow light into the center of the tree, aiding in fruit formation. Also remove any damaged, crossing, or diseased branches to improve growth.

Pests and Diseases: Use proper pest management techniques to control pests like cherry aphids, cherry fruit flies, and borer, and diseases like cherry leaf spot, brown rot, and bacterial canker.

Pollination: ‘Black Tartarian’ cherry trees are not self-pollinating. Plant a ‘Bing’ or ‘Lapins’ cherry tree simultaneously to help with pollination and ensure your trees produce fruit.

Harvesting: ‘Black Tartarian’ cherries will be ready to harvest in early summer when they are firm, red, and fully ripened. Give one a quick taste before harvesting by twisting it off the stems.

Recovery Time: Transitioning from our nursery to your home can be a bit of a shock to your plant. A short acclimation period helps it recover and reduces stress.

Climate Adjustment: Every environment is unique. Giving your plant time to adjust to the local climate, humidity, and light conditions in a shady spot will set it up for better growth and health.

How to Acclimate Your Plant: Keep the plant in its container and place it in a shady, sheltered area away from high winds. Ensure it's watered adequately – the soil should be moist but not waterlogged. Monitor the plant for any signs of distress and allow it to adjust for a few days before planting. After a few days of acclimation, your plant will be better prepared to thrive in its new home for years to come.
