Sowing Info

When to Sow Outside: For mild climates only: 2 to 4 weeks after your average last frost date, when soil temperature is at least 70°F.

When to Start Inside: RECOMMENDED. 8 to 10 weeks before transplanting. Ideal soil temperature for germination is 70°‒90°F. Transplant seedlings outside 2 to 4 weeks after your average last frost date, and when daytime temperatures are at least 70°F, and nighttime temperatures are at least 55°F. Mild Climates: Can also sow in late summer for fall/winter crop.

Sprouts in: 10 – 25 days

Plant Seeds (Depth): ¼"

Space Seeds: Start indoors

Row Spacing: 24" ‒ 36"

Thinning: Start indoors, plant seedlings 18" ‒ 24" apart outside

Growing Info

Harvesting: Harvest when mature size and firm. Jalapeños can be harvested green or red, and are hottest just when they begin to turn from green to red. When harvesting, take care to avoid touching the interior of any broken peppers, as the capsaicin is an extreme irritant, especially to the eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after harvesting or wear gloves to harvest peppers.

Special Care: Pepper seed germinates best in very warm soil. Either use a heat mat under your seed starting tray or place tray in a warm room. Do not overwater, but keep soil just slightly moist. Make sure the potting containers are big enough that the plants’ roots will not be constricted; if seedlings become rootbound, the plants’ growth may be stunted.

Thick walls, big peppers, great flavor!

I heard about Megatron Jalapeno's on Sage & Stone Homesteads channel and had to give them a try. They totally live up to their name. I planted all 10 seeds and had all 10 germinate. They are sturdy, prolific plants and these are the best tasting jalapenos we've ever grown. Beautiful, thick walls with a deep pepper flavor and lower level of heat. We've eaten some of these raw with a burnt-end cream cheese dip in them- delicious! I've also roasted and diced some for the freezer to have for chili and such over the winter, and have made 4 batches of jalapeno jelly. These will be our go-to jalapeno for the garden going forward. (In the attached picture there are a few "regular" jalpenos to the left side of the picture- the rest are the Megatrons. The Megatrons were averaging 3.5 ounces each.)

Plants are productive, and peppers are large and appropriately spicy. Will definitely be growing again.

    Best Jalapeno Peppers...so far...

I've been growing for a few years, now, and I'm still learning. I live in zone 10a (Florida), and I have some good luck with peppers. But compared to seeds I have purchased in the past for this type of pepper, Botanical Interests are blowing the others out of the water. And I can't get over how well the Botanical Interests Megatron Jalapeno peppers are doing! The photos that I am posting were taken on 4/13/16.Thanks.

    Heavy Producer; Full Flavor

These were easy to germinate (very high success rate - 95%) and grow. I planted 3 varieties this season and these were the best. I will double down next season or try them in the greenhouse over winter. They were full flavor, and I used them for jalapeno poppers, and jalapeno cheese bread.

    Hey Fox,

What great photos of your Megatron Jalapeño Chile Peppers! A 95% germination rate is absolutely incredible - you clearly know your way around starting peppers!

We love hearing from gardeners who really put their peppers to the test by growing multiple varieties for comparison. The fact that the Megatrons came out on top among your three varieties speaks volumes about their performance!

Your plans to double down next season AND try them in the greenhouse over winter sound amazing - there's nothing quite like having fresh jalapeños year-round for those poppers and jalapeño cheese bread! Both of those sound absolutely delicious and like perfect ways to showcase that full flavor you mentioned.

    Keep on growing 🌻️
