Native to the Midwest and Western US, blue grama is the most heat- and drought-tolerant native grass. The fascinating inflorescence (arrangement in a row like eyelashes) turn golden brown and occasionally red in the fall, curling as they dry, and the feathery foliage makes a nice contrast in rock gardens and xeric plantings. Skipper butterflies use this grass as a host plant, and birds enjoy the seeds.

When I was 3ish years old- in 1976- I named my grandmother Blue Gramma bc she made me a dress from blue fabric. For the next 50 years and to this day , every single person born into our family refers to her (now long since passed rest her soul) as Blue Gramma. I saw this at my local greenhouse AJ Rahn in Cincinnati and bought the whole stock to plant in my new yard. This grass variety is dainty and cute but hardy and drought resilient like my own Blue Gramma. She taught me how to grow anything - and can all of it when it’s ripe.
I am growing this in a grow bag for transplants so it does well in containers even with completely irregular watering. Ohio 6b.

I was so excited when after four days, all twelve cells had seedlings poking up through the soil. Great germination rate with no special treatment of the seeds. Highly recommend!
