This "lily" is actually a member of the iris family! "Iris" honors the Greek goddess of the rainbow, and these flowers add a perfect pop of color! Crimson-red spots cover the mostly orange petals, and fanned-out leaves and tall, clean stems make them ideal cut flowers. The seedheads split to reveal the namesake blackberry-like seedheads that also look lovely in in autumnal arrangements. Blackberry lilies are tough, drought-tolerant, and attract hummingbirds and other pollinators. Perennial in USDA zones 5 to 10.

It took three full years for our blackberry lilies to flower from seed here in zone 6b but now that they are fully established abd blooming they are a gorgeous addition to our perennial bed. Tall, (currently about 4.5 feet and still growing) they tower over the rest of the flowers and lend an elegant aesthetic to the whole bed. It’s so beautiful to watch them sway in the breeze. Such a nice compliment to rusty red lilies, calenda, yarrow, and coral bells.

My husband couldn't believe I grew this from seed. I planted the seeds winter 2024, it is a beauty. I have three that I planted last year and am hoping they bloom this year. The color is great, it contrasts well with other plants in the garden.

I live in Zone 5 and this iris/lily took 2 seasons to bloom but is totally worth it! The flowers are delicate but colorful and bloom over a long period if the seed pods are removed.

I picked up a package of seeds from the feed store and started my Blackberry Lilies last summer. I wasn’t expecting them to flower this year but was pleasantly surprised when they flowered abundantly. The orange-red petals are stunningly vibrant. I love them so much that I ordered another pack online.

I started these Blackberry Lily seeds is water jugs in January of 2023. They sprouted really nicely and when big enough I potted the individual sprouts about an inch apart in a six terracotta pot. They grew well and wintered over beautifully in my zone 9 garden. This spring I potted them in an 8 inch pot and they have growth significantly. I hope to have blooms this summer.
