Once called "outhouse flowers", stunning hollyhocks were grown around outhouses because hollyhocks were tall enough to cover them, and also as a signal to guests where they were located. This hollyhock has a long bloom period, too! Hollyhock flowers are edible, but very bland; however, the large, colorful petals are lovely garnishing salads or desserts. (The flower's central disk, while edible, can be bitter.) Fairly drought tolerant but performs best with ample moisture and rich soil; otherwise, practically care free.

When to Sow Outside: RECOMMENDED. 1 to 2 weeks after your average last frost date, or 2 months before your average first fall frost date.
When to Start Inside: 6 to 8 weeks before your average last frost date. Roots are sensitive to disturbance; sow in biodegradable pots that can be planted in the ground.

Growing Info
Harvesting: For longest-lasting cut flowers, harvest when 1/3 of the flowers on the stem have opened. Harvest in the morning; cut stem at an angle and immediately place in a bucket of warm water. Before placing in a vase, dip the stem end in boiling water for a minute, or sear it over a flame for 20 seconds; this will stop the flow of the milky sap so it does not clog the stem.

My husband was critical of these in year one. “I don’t get it. Those leaves are okay, but not year, he is impressed! We are about 20’ away from the plants at our outdoor coffee nook, and enjoy watching bumblers, honey bees, hummingbird moths, and an occasion hummingbird dart in and out of the blooms. The deep red/purple are my favorites. Take a chance!

Wow, wow, wow! Hands down my favorite thing we grow. These hollyhocks are 11 ft tall and bloom from late July through October in our Zone 5, high desert location. We have 4 growing outside our kitchen window and they are just perfect. They are pollinator magnets and we get visited by hummingbirds at least daily (see video)! Hollyhocks will always have a place in the garden, which is a good thing because these are prolific self seeders. I had to battle hollyhock weevils this year but just knocked them off into a bucket of water and dish soap and that seemed to solve the problem. Normal rust with hollyhocks. Love these flowers so much, thanks BI!!

Planted the seeds in the fall. Many of them got eaten by slugs and gophers 😭 but the ones that stayed have been thriving in springtime. It’s my first time growing hollyhocks and I can say it is a success - look at them! ❤️

These sweet little hollyhocks are about 4 feet tall & have lovely multi-color pink, cherry, & white blooms. They flower about 3-4 at a time & last several days. Mine bloomed in their 3rd year, & I got a nice stand of them with one regular sized packet.

I bought these because they remind me of the Hollyhocks at my grandma's house when I was little. They have been great and come back every year. Love them.
