Care and Maintenance
Watering: Water newly planted hollies 2-3 times a week for the first few months to help establish roots. Once established, water deeply once a week, adjusting for rainfall, until the plant is well-established. In hot, dry periods, you may need to water more frequently. Always check the soil moisture; it should be moist but not waterlogged.
Fertilizing: Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring. Follow up with a second application in late summer or early fall, as per product instructions. Avoid fertilizing late in the season to prevent new growth that could be damaged by frost. Always water the plant thoroughly after applying fertilizer to help distribute the nutrients.
Pruning: Pruning is minimal but can be done for these reasons:(1) to maintain shape or desired size, prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.(2) Remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches as they occur to maintain plant health.(3) Pruning is generally light, as the plant naturally grows in a narrow, columnar form.
Pests and Diseases: Monitor for pests and diseases and treat accordingly.
Pollination: No need for pollination assistance as this plant is not primarily grown for fruit or flowers.
Harvesting: Sky Pencil Holly is grown for its foliage and form rather than harvestable products. However, you can take cuttings for propagation in late spring or early summer. Use sharp, clean shears to take 4-6 inch cuttings from new growth, strip the lower leaves, dip in rooting hormone, and plant in a well-draining potting mix. Keep moist until roots develop.
