Product Details

A genuine heat lover, Mexican sunflower sets the dog days of summer ablaze with sizzling 3" orange flowers. A large, multi-branching and imposing plant for the back of the border, it tolerates infertile soil, drought, and neglect. Lovely mixed with purple grass, and absolutely stunning next to purple flowers. Sunflowers are edible, with a bittersweet flavor. The petals add a pretty pop of color ion salads and desserts. The young, sunflower buds are edible, with a flavor similar to artichoke hearts. They can be grilled, marinated, or sauteed for an unusual appetizer or side dish.

They really are like a torch at the end of summer!

I loved growing these! I planted them right in front of a bunch of BI sunflowers and when the sunflowers began to fade, the Mexican sunflowers have TAKEN off and are so pretty and prolific! I will definitely grow these again!🧡🏵️

    Hey Cecily,

Thank you so much for sharing your gorgeous photos of your Torch Mexican Sunflowers! What a brilliant planting strategy - using them as the "second act" behind your BI sunflowers! It sounds like you created the perfect succession display where one beautiful bloom takes over just as the other starts to fade.

Your enthusiasm is absolutely contagious, and we're so thrilled you'll be growing them again!

    Keep on growing 🌻️

I grew this towards the end of summer in zone 7b I thought I wasn't going to get a flower because of the late planting. However I have a bloom and more to come. It's the middle of October and I've just covered it on colder nights with some incandescent Christmas lights for a little heat and it's doing better than I anticipated. Can't wait to plant in the spring.

These sunflowers grew like 6 feet tall before flowering, but now I have like 7 or 8 flowers with a few more on the way!

I’ve had so many neighbors ask me about this plant. It not only grew over 6’ tall, it grew through my fence so it can be enjoyed on each side. It’s massive! The pollinators love it. I’ve had hummingbirds, bees and tons of butterflies. The color is intense. Just love it. Ohio, zone 6b.
