A renowned farm-to-table chef and a Cornell breeder worked for 6 years, crossing the flavorful, savory butternut with the sweet buttercup, to create this more manageable, 4"–5" butternut. The thin, edible skin signals ripeness by turning from green to terracotta, either on or off the plant. Compact vines are great for containers or trellises. Plants are resistant to powdery mildew and squash vine borers. Stores up to 6 months.

When to Sow Outside: RECOMMENDED. 1 to 2 weeks after your average last frost date, and when soil temperature is 70°–85°F.
When to Start Inside: Not recommended except in very short growing seasons, 2 to 4 weeks before your average last frost date. Roots sensitive to disturbance; sow in 4" biodegradable pots that can be planted directly into the ground. Transplant when soil temperature is at least 60°F.

Growing Info
Harvesting: Harvest when the squash's rind is hard enough that you can't dent it with your fingernail and before first frost. Cut stem, (don't break it off) leaving 2" of stem attached, which keeps the squash whole, leaving no opening for infection. Though fruits are hard and may seem indestructible, treat them gently; bruising can spoil squash.

These are wonderful! Good germination, fun to watch grow and change color. And they taste SO good! They're small, so they microwave quickly, then just add butter or a drizzle of maple syrup. I only got 4 squash off of 2 plants (although one plant is still alive so I might get more), probably because of poor pollination and bouts of powdery mildew. Great size for growing in containers.

Despite a challenging growing year in 2024, I havested 22 honeynut squash from my ONE plant. I had it trellised but throughout the summer continued to prune the vines (i.e., cut off may blossoms that could have produced) to keep the plant friendly to the rest of my garden. I have grown this variety from BI with great success for several years.

Seeds arrived quickly. Every seed sprouted and the plants are doing great! Can’t wait to harvest (assuming I can keep the squirrels at bay.)

I read that you can expect 3-5 fruits per plant — I have 2 plants and have harvested 32 squash so far, with another 8-10 ready to harvest in the next couple of weeks. Excellent germination, no powdery mildew or any other issues, and great-tasting squash. I let one sprawl and take over and trellised the other one, both were very happy. Friends and neighbors are being ding-dong-ditched with squash and I still have plenty for my freezer.
