These Brazilian peppers are tangy, sweet, and smokey with a touch of heat. Biquinho (bee-KEE-nyo) means "little beak" in Portuguese; it is also known as button, piquillo, or chupetinha pepper. Green peppers ripen to red (red -colored seeds) or yellow (natural-colored seeds) and are traditionally pickled and served as appetizers or a drink garnish. A unique pepper that all can enjoy. 1,000–2,000 Scoville heat units (mild).

Transplant seedlings outside 2 to 4 weeks after your average last frost date, and when daytime temperatures are at least 70°F, and nighttime temperatures are at least 55°F. Growing Info
Harvesting: Harvest when peppers have turned to either red or golden yellow. When harvesting, take care to avoid touching the interior of any broken peppers, as the capsaicin is an extreme irritant, especially to the eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after harvesting or wear gloves to harvest peppers.

I started these under lights indoors last spring. The seed germinated well. The little plants were decorative from the beginning. As they grew, I transplanted them to individual 3" square pots. When warmer weather came, I transplanted three reds and three yellows to individual three-gallon pots, which I set against a south-facing wall. I live in a cold climate that peppers generally hate. However, these did well, blooming and bearing fruit. Now (early October) I'm harvesting plenty of them to pickle and can in half-pint jars. I'd grow them just for the pretty plants, even if they weren't edible. My husband calls them "Being Cute" peppers. Recommended.

It took 2 months for about 30% of the seeds to germinate and they are so slow growing that now in mid September they still haven't blossomed in full sun 6-8 hours per day and watered daily. Buy the picked peppers and plant something worth the effort.
