Product Details

Cutting into this large, 20–35 pound, oblong melon will reveal plenty of juicy, sweet, yellow fruit. These melons have a dark green rind marked with lighter green stripes. Developed from the very popular red-fleshed 'Mountain Sweet' melon grown in the mid-1800s by farmers in the Northeast, this variety grows in any region with warm summers. Long, warm summers produce the largest watermelons.

Growing Info

Harvesting: It can be tricky to know exactly when a watermelon is ripe and ready to pick. First, know the number of "days to harvest" and begin checking fruits as harvest date draws closer. Signs to look for are: (1) the bottom of the melon (where it lies on the soil) turns from light green to a yellowish color; (2) the surface color of the fruit turns dull; (3) the skin becomes resistant to penetration by the thumbnail and is rough to the touch; and (4) light green, curly tendril on the stem near the point of attachment of the melon is brown and dry. All of these indicators may not necessarily occur at the same time.

    GREAT WATERMELON!!

This melon has moved to the top of my list for favorite watermelon! It's big, bright yellow flesh, and tastes like candy! It doesn't get much better than that! Turned out to be the best of my crop last year so I'm growing 3x as many this year.

    Overall Great

Tasted great and sweet, but the seeds were just too tough for me to find pleasant to chew, and too many to spit out. For that reason, I cant give the full 5 stars. These were large melons, easily 25+ lbs. I enjoyed growing these but will skip out next year

    Hey Amanda,

Thank you so much for the 4-star review and for sharing your honest experience with the Mountain Sweet Yellow Watermelon Seeds! We're thrilled to hear that you grew some absolutely massive melons - 25+ pounds is seriously impressive! - and that the flavor was great and sweet.

We totally understand your feedback about the seeds. Mountain Sweet Yellow is an heirloom variety that does tend to have those larger, more prominent seeds compared to some of the newer seedless or thin-seeded varieties. For folks who really want to enjoy eating the whole bite without dealing with seeds, it can definitely be a bit much having to navigate around them or spit them out constantly.

It sounds like you had fantastic growing success with these though! Getting watermelons that size shows you really nailed the growing conditions. The flavor being sweet and delicious is exactly what we love to hear about this variety - it's just that the seed situation wasn't quite right for your eating preferences.

Your feedback about the seed texture and quantity will be really helpful for other gardeners who are trying to decide if this variety is the right fit for their taste preferences and eating style.

    Fantastic!

I am a beginner gardener and I’ve never grown anything before but I was determined to grow yellow watermelons this year. It’s going great! I have three watermelons growing from three different seeds - it’s been a long journey but it’s going well. I would recommend these seeds to anyone who is determined to grow yellow watermelon.
