Product Details

Prominent, local chef, John Platt, creates some of the best dishes in Boulder, Colorado. That's why we trusted him to choose this special medley—25% each of 'Lolla Rossa' and 'Oak Leaf' lettuces; 10% each of 'Black Seeded Simpson' and 'Summer Bibb' lettuces, arugula, mizuna, and tatsoi. A good container mix.

Family: Asteraceae

Type: Mesclun Lettuce (Learn more)

Native: UnUnknown; lettuce has been in cultivation for a long time.

Hardiness: Frost-tolerant annuals

Exposure: Full sun to part shade

Plant Dimensions: Leaves are harvested at 4"–6" tall for mesclun.

Variety Info: LEAF LETTUCES: 'LOLLA ROSA': Deeply curled leaves with very frilly, red edges. 'OAK LEAF': Medium green, deeply lobed, oak leaf-shaped leaves with mild flavor, and slower to bolt. 'BLACK SEEDED SIMPSON': Crinkled, light green, crisp leaves with frilly edges. SUMMER BIBB LETTUCE: Soft, slightly crumpled light-green leaves in a loose head, often with a creamy yellow core. GREENS: ARUGULA (rocket salad): Medium green, deeply lobed leaves are rich and peppery with a hint of nut. MUSTARD, 'MIZUNA': Thin stems, serrated light green leaves with slightly peppery, mildly spicy flavor. BOK CHOY, 'TATSOI': Thick, dark green leaves with a milder flavor than western head cabbage.

Attributes: Frost Tolerant, Good for Containers

Sowing Info

When to Sow Outside: RECOMMENDED. 2 to 4 weeks before your average last frost date, and when soil temperature is at least 40°F, ideally 60°–70°F. Successive Sowings: Every 3 weeks until 2 weeks before your average first fall frost date. Mild Climates: Sow in fall and winter for cool season harvests.

When to Start Inside: Transplanting is not recommended, although mesclun can be grown indoors on a sunny windowsill or under grow lights.

Days to Emerge: 5–14 days

Seed Depth: Surface to ⅛"

Seed Spacing: Broadcast about ½" apart

Thinning: Not required for baby greens

Growing Info

Harvesting: Harvest leaves with scissors 2" above the soil surface. Mesclun will regrow and provide 2–3 harvests, although the first harvest is usually the best. If you wish to harvest mature heads, cut off at 2" above ground level as soon as possible after head forms; new leaves will grow form the center. The earlier the harvest, the more tender the crop.

I live in SC, zone 7b/8a, and have been experiencing an unusually warm fall. After some “chaos” seed planting of my lettuce blend I have a thick yield to harvest from! Trying to enjoy as much as I can before the temps drop. I’ve always had great experiences and results from my Botanical Interest seed purchases!

I love this mix of lettuce. I am able to have a fresh salad, without worry of pesticides or bacteria from store brought salad mix.

It's always good to try something new

My husband and I hed never tasted arugula, tatsoi, or mizuna before. We found all to be delightful when served in a tossed green salad, along with lettuce. The only problem we had was that the first batch we grew turned out to be mostly arugula and mizuna. I later found out that I need to mix the seeds thoroughly before pouring them out of the packet. The next batch we grew from the same seed packet had many more lettuce seeds.

    Hey Cindy,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with our Chef's Medley Mesclun Lettuce Seeds! We love that you and your husband got to discover arugula, tatsoi, and mizuna for the first time - those greens really do add such wonderful flavors and textures to a tossed salad! Your tip about mixing the seeds thoroughly before pouring is absolutely brilliant and so helpful for other gardeners. Mesclun mixes can definitely settle during shipping and handling, with the different seed sizes and weights naturally separating in the packet. It's great that you figured out that trick and got a much more balanced mix in your second batch. Thanks for sticking with it and for sharing that valuable growing tip with fellow gardeners. We're so glad you found all those greens delightful! Keep on growing 🌻️
