Product Details

One of the most popular hollyhocks of all time, 'Chater's Double' was named after the English horticulturist, Chater of Essex, who developed this variety in 1880s. Colors include golden-yellow, rose, maroon, salmon-pink, scarlet, and white. Flowers have a long bloom period and are edible! Fairly drought tolerant but performs best with ample moisture and rich soil. Hollyhock flowers are edible, but very bland; however, the large, colorful petals are lovely garnishing salads or desserts. (The flower's central disk, while edible, can be bitter.)

These are amazing! Photo is our first blooms ever—the color was a surprise! They are in their second year. They were transplanted to the ground last summer and overwintered here in Colorado. We are so happy with these. My boyfriend posted a picture to a gardening group on Facebook and it got over 100 comments! Many wanted to know the variety, so I’ve been sharing the link to these awesome seeds—highly recommended!

I planted the Chater's Double Hollyhock seeds last year, and the very first flower bloomed today! It's red, and it's beautiful! A lesson in patience...

I started these hollyhock last year from seed. They produced very nice, strong seedlings and they grew all last year (2019), overwintered and this spring grew fast with large strong leaves and sending up multiple flower stalks. The problem was that when they bloomed, none were doubles as shown on the packet. I got one very pale yellow color and two white. Each color had about two outer rows of petals and long stamens with a lot of pollen, but only the white seemed to try to produce the full fluffy interior petals. The inner petals on the white ones were very few and just a few curly petals. A positive is that the bees are enjoying visiting the blooms and they plants are healthy. According to the picture on the packet, these should resemble small peony type blooms but did not. I love Botanical Interests seeds and will continue using your seeds, but for some reason this hollyhock just did not produce as described.
