Growing Info

Harvesting: When onion tops have fallen over and turned yellow or brown, they are ready for harvest. Harvest in the morning, lifting onions with a garden fork. Dry them in the garden in the sun for 2 to 3 days, lightly covering the bulbs with straw, or the tops of other onions to prevent sunscald. Cure onions for 3 to 7 days in a dry area with good air circulation. Once dry, cut the roots to 1/4", and the greens to 1" to create a seal, preventing decay.

I purchased almost all of my seed packets from botanical interest this year and was pretty disappointed with the germination rate on a bunch of them. For instance, I purchased two packets of the pineapple tomato, started all of the seeds and zero of them germinated. I'm not exaggerating, when it came to the pineapple tomatoes, the Scotch bonnet peppers, and the habanero peppers, I planted every single seed in all of those packets so that I could distribute the extra seedlings to my friends and family and absolutely none of them grew. Plenty of other things did great. Other tomatoes did great, the jalapenos did fine, The sugar snap peas and carrots and beets and cilantro and celery. A bunch of stuff came up just as expected. That's why I know it wasn't user error that made these seeds fail. my setup has plenty of light, air, movement, heat, water, and nutrients. Some of these seed packets were just complete duds. I understand sometimes having a lower germination rate but the entire packet? Especially when those packets are sold by the seed, not by weight, as was the case with the Scotch bonnet, Clancy potato, and the pineapple tomato. You expect at least an 80% germination rate. I got nothing. Pretty disappointed.
