Product Details

Winter radishes are a must for radish lovers. 'Round Black Spanish', also known as 'Noir Gros Rond d'Hiver', grown in the U.S. since the 1800s, is an extra large, winter radish that adds spiciness to raw or cooked dishes; spiciness declines when cooked. Winter radishes require a shortening day length and cool temperatures to mature the edible root; sow after mid-summer and into early fall. They can be stored for long periods.

Grew this radish several times and did not enjoy it. I am a radish fanatic, I love them mild, spicy, long, globe, daikon, you name it…. I grow it en masse. This one though ….. the taste was not good. Bitter, especially the skins. I tried roasting them and they were still yuck. My family would not eat them so I will not plant again. If you are going to try them for novelty…. You might consider harvesting a little on the early side. These will really get woody and unpleasant if left too long. I’m talking “hard to cut” woody. I’ve attempted them twice in two seasons (spring/fall). Just not for us. :)

The ones I grew turned out well. These are winter radishes, if you want them sweet and crisp, then grow them in cool weather. For me (zone 10) that is a late Summer/Fall planting; harvesting in Spring.

I grew these with some purple winter radishes last year. I am sure they crossed. I planted the seeds from those. Can't wait to taste how they turn out this week.

This variety did not bulb up for me when other varieties grown at the same time did unfortunately. They came up fast though.

The leaves look good but with 2 different plantings, neither have bulbed out.
