Plant bulbs and 3-inch (7.62 cm) potted plants faster than ever before with this special auger, which also is perfect for post hole digging and planting bare-root trees and shrubs. It’s also a great choice for other tasks such as installing beach volleyball poles and umbrellas or boring holes under sidewalks for irrigation lines. Drill sold separately.
Get Power and Versatility
In addition to helping out in the garden, this bit works wonders as a sand and beach umbrella auger. It makes installing beach volleyball poles or boring holes under sidewalks for irrigation lines easier and more efficient.
The bulb auger features a 3-inch (7.62 cm) diameter and a 24-inch (61 cm) extended length. It also features 12 to 18 inches (30.5 cm to 45.7 cm) of tough, 10-gauge flighting on a strong, 5/8-inch (1.59 cm) shaft made completely from steel.
Equip your auger to fit a 3/8-inch or a 1/2-inch drill chuck. For tougher soil conditions like sand, clay, and loose, rocky material, add a heavy duty tip made from military-grade abrasion resistant material.
3/8 inch or 1/2 inch?
Drills typically come in 2 sizes: 3/8-inch (.95 cm) or 1/2-inch (1.27 cm) hex drive. This measurement refers to the width of the hex shaped connection between the drill and auger. Most drills will display their size in the fine print on the side of the drill (see picture). Power Planter offers both sizes of hex drives plus an adaptable tube drive option for power users. If you are boring through rough ground with small rocks, sand, or hard clay soil we strongly advise using a drill with a 1/2-inch hex drive to increase torque. For best results do not use a 3/8 inch auger with a 1/2 inch hex drive drill.

How to use?
How to use?
To use an auger, simply fit the hex head to a power drill or cordless drill. Set the drill speed on its lowest setting (more torque) and adjust the chuck to a resistance setting appropriate for your fitness level. Now you’re ready to start digging.
For larger holes, you may want to dig a small pilot hole before starting. Then, place the auger’s tip at the center of the hole you plan to dig, and activate the drill or powerhead.
Make sure to keep the auger vertical as it digs and be prepared — the drill will kick back in your hand slightly as the auger starts to bite into the soil. Once the auger is digging, there is no need to press on it. Just let the auger dig until you’ve reached the desired depth, and then you can safely remove the tool from the hole.
FAQ
FAQ
- What Is an Earth Auger?
An earth auger is a simple tool designed to help you bore holes in the ground. Typically lightweight and inexpensive to purchase, an auger can help you with any task — from planting bulbs or grass plugs, to digging fence post holes. Just attach it to a cordless drill and you can dig holes anywhere. - How Much Power Do I Need?
It’s important to make sure you have the proper drill or power engine for your Power Planter® auger and your project. We recommend a minimum power rating of 18V for most gardening tasks although a 14V drill will work with our 7″ to 12″ inch augers when planting in light soil. For augers 4 inches or wider or, when digging holes deeper than 12 inches in hard soil, we generally recommend 20V to 60V drills. Learn how much drill power you will need in our power guide. - How Do I Choose the Right Auger?
To choose the auger that best fits your needs, consider how you’ll use it. If you plan on only using your auger to plant plugs, for instance, then a 2- or 3-inch auger will fit your needs. If you anticipate the need to bury stakes or set small posts, then you may prefer a 4-inch auger or another, larger size.
Also keep the length in mind. Shorter augers will require you to be on your hands and knees as you dig, while an extended 48-inch auger will let you dig holes while from a standing position. If back pain is a concern, then go with a longer auger to minimize strain.
