Product Details

In bonsai, you gently coax a plant to a specific, aesthetic shape and form over time; it is artistry in plants. The tools used to do bonsai are no different.

Our Wakazura Yasugi-steel traditional bonsai shears are hand-forged by third-generation bonsai tool artisans in the city of Sanjo, located in the Niigata prefecture of Japan. The city has a reputation dating back to the 17th century for producing high-quality metalwork from their blacksmiths and artisans, and they strive to keep their tools at the pinnacle of quality.

These bonsai shears are crafted of a unique carbon steel known as Yasugi Specialty Steel, a form of steel only available in Japan. This blend of high carbon steel and iron ensures excellent tool longevity and sharpness. Impurities are removed during the metal preparation process, and the steel is forged and rolled by artisans in a hot process to reinforce it further, similarly to how katanas are made. As a result, these scissors are wear-resistant and durable.

Not only are these tools ideal for bonsai, but they serve double-duty in traditional gardening as well. They are ideal for pruning, trimming, or leaf and shoot-cutting purposes, and can cut material up to 1/2" in diameter. Use them for deadheading, light harvesting of your kitchen herbs, and other gardening tasks.

Combining traditional butterfly-wing handles and functionality, these handcrafted scissors will surely stand the test of time and lend additional beauty to your daily garden tasks.

How to use?

Use these as you would any bonsai shears or small pruning shears or snips - they can be used to cut any plant material up to 1/2" in diameter. We do not recommend cutting bonsai wire with these shears; please use a wire cutter for metals. These shears are also an excellent companion in normal gardening tasks and can be used for harvesting flowers or kitchen herbs, for light pruning duties, and the like.

The manufacturers recommend using an oilstone, a sap cleaning stone, and oil when sharpening these shears. It is important to remove sap or plant juice from the shears prior to storing them to ensure longevity and cleanliness of the blades. Sharpening them at the same time will keep them always in perfect condition for later use.
